More Than Education: Preparing Young Adults for God's Calling

Sometimes it is the consistency that makes all the difference.

Like our morning Matins.

There is something formative about the opportunity to posture yourself humbly—to kneel as you confess your sins, and then to stand boldly as you recite the historic faith of the Church through the creeds.

Or the simple practice of reading and listening to the Word of God, following the reading plan we use throughout our program to consume the Bible in nine months. After all, it is the Word of God that sharpens us, convicts us, and sanctifies us. As we read, learn, and listen, the Holy Spirit increasingly convicts us, draws us nearer to the Lord, and teaches us to live in accordance with His statutes.

Sometimes it is the liturgies that make the difference; after all it is these practices that form habits and orient our hearts rightly toward our Lord and acquaint us with the divine.

And sometimes, it is little things that make all the difference.

Little things like a cup of coffee with an old friend.

This week, one of my students and I were able to sneak away for coffee with an old friend of mine. I call her an old friend, though we have really only known each other for about eight years. But the depth of friendship runs deeper as we are sisters in Christ, united by the Spirit, and the kind of kinship that comes through that shared faith cannot really be quantified by time.

There are just some people who seem to carry a kindred spirit with you almost immediately.

Shelleen is one of those people.

Shelleen is a local entrepreneur, musician, poet, and children’s book author. When I began talking with one of my students about her passion for writing, I knew they had to meet Shelleen.

Shelleen’s testimony to God’s faithfulness is infectious, and her storytelling is captivating.

Before we had even ordered our coffee, she had my student completely captivated. For more than an hour, we talked about what it means to serve God with the gifts He has given us—to be co-laborers with Him in the work He has called us to do.

And story after story, Shelleen shared about His faithfulness: the ways He has walked with her through seasons of humble sanctification, refined her gifts, and cultivated in her the ability to create art that points to His goodness, His mercy, and His care for the people of His pasture.

Sometimes education happens within the four walls of a classroom, sometimes it comes from books, sometimes from lectures or deep conversations and other times for liturgies.

And sometimes, you can learn simple lessons about life and business over a cup of coffee on a fall day in a small town with someone who has walked a few more miles than you have.

At Worldview Institute, you get both..

Because here, you are not a number. You are a person with gifts, passions, questions, and calling.

And we are an organization that thinks outside the box to help you discover how your gifts can be used in the world God has made.

We connect you with people who inspire you, challenge you, teach you, and open doors you may never have found on your own.

That is part of what we mean when we say that Worldview Institute helps young adults discover their calling.

We don't just tell them to figure out what they want to do.

We put them in the room with people who are already doing meaningful work—and help them begin to imagine what faithful work might look like for them.

If you would like to know more about the work of Shelleen and her work check out her Fruit Fables series. As I told her over coffee, when I read them to my grandbabies they almost always bring a tear to my eye because they capture the truth of the Word in a bold simplicity that speaks to the deep and profound truths found in the scriptures. If you have little ones, they are a must have in your library. https://www.shelleenweaver.com/series/fruit-fables/
